List of Showings at New Buffalo Performing Arts Center:
Feature Films
Feb. 4 - 10:30 am    The Red Balloon - France
Albert Lamorisse’ exquisite The Red Balloon remains one of the most beloved children’s films of all time. In this deceptively simple, nearly-wordless tale, a young boy discovers a stray balloon, which seems to have a mind of its own, on the streets of Paris. The two become inseparable, until the harsh realities of the world interfere. With its glorious palette and allegorical purity, the Academy Award winning The Red Balloon has enchanted movie lovers, young and old, for generations.
Feb. 4 - 11:15 am    The White Mane - France
In the south of France, in a vast plain region called the Camargue, lives White Mane, a magnificent stallion and the leader of a herd of wild horses too proud to be broken by humans. Only Falco, a young fisherman, can tame him. A strong friendship grows between the boy and the horse, as the two go looking for the freedom that the world of men won’t allow them.
Feb. 4 - 1:30 pm    Eleanor's Secret - France
Seven-year-old Nat still doesn’t know how to read when he discovers the heroes and villains from children’s literature living inside the books left to him by his eccentric aunt. When his parents start selling off the books, Nat braves everything to save his tiny friends, and their stories, from being erased forever.
Feb. 4 - 7:00 pm    One Lucky Elephant - USA
Sixteen years have passed since circus producer David Balding adopted Flora, the orphaned baby African elephant he lovingly raised as part of his family and made the star of his show. As she approaches adulthood, David realizes that Flora needs other elephants, but the road to retirement is a difficult and emotional journey. Ten years in the making, the film explores the consequences of keeping wild animals in captivity, while never losing sight of the delicate love story at its heart.
Feb. 5 - 2:30 pm    What's On Your Plate? - USA
A witty and provocative documentary about kids and food politics. Filmed over the course of one year, the film follows two eleven-year-old multi-racial city girls as they explore their place in the food chain. Feature Films
Feb. 11 - 1:00 pm    Abel's Island - USA
Based on the classic children’s book by William Steig, this animated film is the story of a wealthy and pampered mouse who, while chasing his wife’s scarf during a storm, is swept away to a deserted island. Abel, who has been coddled and waited on since birth, has to rely on his wits and sorely underused common sense to survive. Featuring the voice of Tim Curry.
Feb. 11 - 1:30 pm    The Marzipan Pig - USA
A marzipan pig falls behind a sofa and is lost. The pig laments being forgotten and as dust begins to cover him, he remains hopeful about someone discovering him. In his loneliness, the pig’s feelings of love reach out to an owl, a mouse, and a hibiscus flower, causing a strange chain of events. Based on the award-winning book by Russell Hoban and narrated by Tim Curry.
Feb. 11 - 2:00 pm    The Man Who Walked Between the Towers - USA
In 1974, French aerialist Philippe Petit threw a tightrope between the two towers of the World Trade Center and spent an hour walking, dancing and performing high-wire tricks a quarter mile up in the sky. This short film captures the poetry and magic of the event with a visual charm of its own: lyrical words and animation that present the detail and daring of the vertiginous drama of Petit’s feat.
Feb. 11 - 2:30 pm    The Way Things Go - Switzerland
Inside a warehouse artists build an enormous, precarious structure 100 ft. long made out of common household items - tea kettles, tires, old shoes, balloons, wooden ramps. Then with fire, water, gravity and chemistry, they create a spectacular chain reaction, self-destructing performance of physical interactions, chemical reactions, and precisely crafted chaos worthy of Rube Goldberg or Alfred Hitchcock.
Feb. 11 - 3:00 pm    Louder Than A Bomb - USA
By turns hopeful and heartbreaking, this film follows four Chicago high school poetry teams as they gear up to compete in the world’s largest youth slam. !is is not high school poetry as you know it. This is language as a joyful release.
